Aroma

Very pale pink in colour, this rosé has an open, inviting nose of medium intensity. Fresh red fruit leads with strawberry and cranberry, lifted by guava and rockmelon aromatics.

Palette

A fresh, zesty acid attack with a slight spritz leads into a medium-bodied palate with some gentle phenolic grip. The finish is lengthy, carried on bright fruit aromatics.

Pairings

Its freshness and delicate red fruit make it a natural with Tasmanian seafood such as grilled prawns, salt and pepper calamari or fresh oysters. It also suits charcuterie, antipasto and soft cheeses, and works nicely with salads, Vietnamese rice paper rolls or a light Thai-style dish.

Wine Making

West Tamar fruit, with Pinot Noir from the estate vineyard and Cabernet and Syrah from a neighbouring vineyard. All fruit was hand-picked, destemmed and gently direct pressed. The Pinot was fermented in stainless steel, while the Cabernet and Syrah were fermented in seasoned oak. The wine spent five months on full lees, with full malolactic fermentation on a fraction of the Cabernet and Syrah. Gently filtered and bottled under screwcap.

Meet the owners

Utzinger is a genuine love story. Swiss-trained winemaker Matthias Utzinger met Tasmanian-raised Lauren while travelling, and after a stint learning the ropes at Stefano Lubiana's Huon Valley vineyard, the couple planted their own five-hectare certified organic estate from scratch at Legana in 2018. Every vine, clone and row spacing was chosen deliberately, and the wines, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Riesling and a fumé-style Sauvignon Blanc, are made with minimal intervention. Their "Roter Satz" field blend has already picked up back-to-back trophies at the Young Gun of Wine Awards.

Tamar Valley

About the region

The Tamar Valley is Tasmania's oldest wine region, stretching from Launceston to the Bass Strait in the state's north. Its cool maritime climate and iron-rich soils create ideal growing conditions, and the numbers speak for themselves, home to over 30 family-owned wineries, the Tamar Valley accounts for more than a third of Tasmania's total wine production. Viticulture here goes back a long way too, with the first commercial vineyard established in the mid-1800s at Windermere, its cuttings even helping establish some of South Australia's earliest vineyards. Today, the Tamar Valley is celebrated for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and sparkling wines, each one reflecting the region's exceptional terroir and winemaking heritage.
