Utzinger is a genuine love story. Swiss-trained winemaker Matthias Utzinger met Tasmanian-raised Lauren while travelling, and after a stint learning the ropes at Stefano Lubiana's Huon Valley vineyard, the couple planted their own five-hectare certified organic estate from scratch at Legana in 2018. Every vine, clone and row spacing was chosen deliberately, and the wines, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Riesling and a fumé-style Sauvignon Blanc, are made with minimal intervention. Their "Roter Satz" field blend has already picked up back-to-back trophies at the Young Gun of Wine Awards.

Utzinger Fumé Blanc 2025 delights with fresh passionfruit and elderflower scents complemented by a crisp, vibrant palate and a smooth, mineral-driven finish. This wine is an excellent choice for those who appreciate lively white wines with subtle complexity.
Utzinger's Rosé is a still wine with a gentle fizz. Pale pink, welcoming, and full of summer energy. Fresh strawberry, cranberry, guava, and rockmelon on the nose, with a lively acid backbone and subtle phenolic layers adding depth and intrigue. Medium-bodied with a lingering fruit finish that invites you back for another sip. A delightful choice for warm days and good company. Pair with fresh seafood, light salads, or charcuterie. Matthias Utzinger brings a European precision to Tasmanian Riesling, and this 2023 is a beautiful expression of that approach. Pale yellow with a green tint, the nose is intense and floral with butterfly bush, bergamot citrus, dried apricot, and a subtle leesy complexity with a hint of matchstick. The palate is mellow on entry, building to a fairly full-bodied experience with beautifully balanced acidity. Textural, fresh, and long. Pair with pork, Asian cuisine, or aged soft cheese. Drink now through 2031.
The Roter Satz is Utzinger doing what Utzinger does best, taking West Tamar fruit seriously and getting out of its way.
A blend of Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir, all hand-picked and fully destemmed before a wild ferment and extended time on skins. Basket pressed into a mix of old and new French oak, then left unfined and unfiltered. The result is a wine that’s honest about what it is and where it comes from.
Dark crimson in the glass, with blackcurrant, cooked plum, sour cherry, vanilla, and white pepper on the nose. The palate is full-bodied with real volume and a soft attack giving way to a generous mid-palate and a long, structured finish underpinned by firm young tannins. It’s drinking well now, but give it a few years in bottle and it’ll show you something else entirely.

The Estate is Utzinger's more serious Chardonnay, a step up in complexity and ambition. Bright yellow with a golden glow, the nose is open and inviting with roasted nuts, oyster shell, brioche, butterscotch, and caramel. The palate has balanced medium acidity and a fuller body with a distinct phenolic grip. The finish is long and refined, with leesy and toasted characters that speak to real craftsmanship. Pair with fresh crayfish, aged soft cheese, or roast chicken. Drink now through 2031.
