The WildState Range
Pressing Matters began in 2002 when Greg Melick, a barrister and former Major General with a lifelong love of wine, and his wife Michelle planted a vineyard in the Coal River Valley inspired by the neighbouring Morningside property. First releases came in 2006, and the estate quickly built a reputation for Riesling and Pinot Noir grown over a rare seam of limestone that runs through the valley, adding real finesse and structure to the wines. In 2025 the Melicks sold their remaining stake to the Fogarty Wine Group, with winemaking now handled by Liam McElhinney, though the focus on Riesling and Pinot Noir from this distinctive site remains unchanged.
How to shop
Stick to One Corner of the Island
Every region in Tasmania grows something a little differently. Building a bundle around one region, say the Tamar Valley or the East Coast, is a way to really get to know a place, its soil, its climate, its particular way of making Pinot Noir or Riesling. It's less about variety and more about depth.
Get to Know a Variety Properly
Tasmania makes more than one style of Pinot Noir, more than one style of Riesling. Building a bundle around a single variety lets you taste how region, producer and approach can change the same grape into something completely different from bottle to bottle.
Follow One Winemaker's Range
Behind every label is a person making decisions, about the vineyard, the vintage, the style they're going for. Building a bundle around a single producer is a way to taste those decisions side by side and get a real sense of what makes their wine theirs.

The R9 sits between the bone-dry R0 and the luscious R139, nine grams of residual sugar that adds just enough roundness to soften the edges without losing the wine's electric energy. Pale with green tinges, the nose is delicate with preserved lime, dried rose petal, pear, and Cox's Orange Pippin apple. Juicy and bright on the palate, with a clean, clear finish. The perfect introduction to the Pressing Matters range. Pair with Asian cuisine, fresh seafood, or soft cheeses. Drink now through 2031.
Pressing Matters is one of Tasmania's most dedicated Pinot producers, and this 2021 is a beautiful expression of their Coal River Valley home. Rich plum and black cherry on the nose, with lively acidity and luxurious tannins on the palate. Deep in colour and refined in character this a wine that reflects its unique terroir with quiet confidence. Pair with duck, venison, or slow-braised beef. Drink now through 2031.
At 139 grams of residual sugar, the R139 is Pressing Matters' most indulgent Riesling and one of the most extraordinary sweet wines made in Australia. From the cool 2021 Coal River Valley harvest, winemaker Sam Connew has crafted something of sublime elegance. Pale straw-green, with pure aromas of white lily, Granny Smith apple, lime, and lemon. Vibrant acidity perfectly balances the natural sweetness, delivering a finish of extraordinary length. Enjoy now or cellar for decades. Pair with blue cheese, crème brûlée, or fresh stone fruit. Drink now through 2041.
The R0 is Pressing Matters' bone-dry expression. Zero grams of residual sugar, nothing to hide behind. Pale with green highlights, the nose reveals preserved lime, dried rose petal, and pear, with a crisp Cox's orange crunch. Clean and vibrant on the palate, with juicy flavours and impressive length. A Riesling for those who like their whites with real backbone. Pair with fresh oysters, sashimi, or grilled fish. Drink now through 2032.
