$43.00
At 139 grams of residual sugar, the R139 is Pressing Matters' most indulgent Riesling and one of the most extraordinary sweet wines made in Australia. From the cool 2021 Coal River Valley harvest, winemaker Sam Connew has crafted something of sublime elegance. Pale straw-green, with pure aromas of white lily, Granny Smith apple, lime, and lemon. Vibrant acidity perfectly balances the natural sweetness, delivering a finish of extraordinary length. Enjoy now or cellar for decades. Pair with blue cheese, crème brûlée, or fresh stone fruit. Aroma
A huge nose of intense lime, apricot and honey.
Palette
The palate is rich and unctuous, with fabulous concentration but never heavy. It builds and finishes with a crescendo of cumquat and preserved lime notes. Tangy acidity is cleverly concealed and keeps everything in check and lively. On the palate, this wine unfolds with richness and unctuous texture, showcasing fabulous concentration without becoming cumbersome. The experience crescendos with vibrant cumquat and preserved lime notes, while cleverly concealed tangy acidity ensures a balanced and lively finish.
Pairings
Pairs well with foie gras, blue cheeses like Roquefort, or fruit-based desserts such as pineapple tarte tatin.
Wine Making
Crafted using the traditional cane-cut method, the Riesling grapes are left to wither on the vine after severing, concentrating sugars and intensifying natural flavours. Carefully hand-picked, the fruit is gently bag-pressed, cold-settled, and fermented at cool temperatures using a neutral yeast to preserve the clarity and aromatic precision of the Riesling grape.
Fermentation is deliberately halted to retain its signature sweetness, followed by 6–8 weeks of lees ageing, adding subtle texture and complexity to the palate.
Expect vibrant notes of preserved lime, apricot, marmalade, and bergamot, layered with hints of brown sugar and rosewater. The palate is rich and unctuous yet finely balanced by piercing acidity, offering both indulgence and elegance in every sip.
Meet the owners
Pressing Matters began in 2002 when Greg Melick, a barrister and former Major General with a lifelong love of wine, and his wife Michelle planted a vineyard in the Coal River Valley inspired by the neighbouring Morningside property. First releases came in 2006, and the estate quickly built a reputation for Riesling and Pinot Noir grown over a rare seam of limestone that runs through the valley, adding real finesse and structure to the wines. In 2025 the Melicks sold their remaining stake to the Fogarty Wine Group, with winemaking now handled by Liam McElhinney, though the focus on Riesling and Pinot Noir from this distinctive site remains unchanged.

Coal River Valley
About the region
Tucked into the valleys surrounding the historic town of Richmond, the Coal River Valley is Tasmania's sunniest wine region. Low rainfall, abundant sunshine and cooling breezes off the Tasman Sea come together to create conditions that are about as close to perfect as it gets for grape growing. It shows in the wines: Chardonnay with real texture and depth, Pinot Noir with elegance and structure, Riesling with precision, and sparkling wines that hold their own against the best in the world.
