Utzinger Pinot Noir 2024

(1)

$47.00

Swiss-born winemaker Matthias Utzinger brings a European sensibility to Tasmanian Pinot, and it shows. Medium burgundy red, with ripe cherry, plum, and strawberry fruit accented by warm spice and subtle underwood. Gentle oak influence adds complexity without dominating. The palate is soft on entry, with medium-plus acidity and youthful tannins that will soften beautifully over time. A wine with a long future ahead of it. Pair with duck, pork, or mushroom dishes. Drink now through 2032.

Aroma

Medium burgundy red in colour, this Pinot Noir opens with tar and warm spice, layered over fresh cherry and strawberry fruit. Lifted red fruit aromatics carry a bunchy undertone, with subtle oak influence in the background.

Palette

A relatively soft attack leads into medium acidity and young, chalky tannins that should soften quickly. Medium to full in body, it finishes long.

Pairings

The fresh red fruit and gentle spice make this a great match for roast duck, slow-cooked lamb shoulder or pork belly. Mushroom risotto or a wild mushroom pasta suits the savoury, bunchy character, while charcuterie and soft cheeses like brie or camembert work well for a lighter match.

Wine Making

Hand-picked West Tamar fruit, with 30% whole bunch as part of a carbonic maceration. Cold soaked before a wild ferment, then pressed before dryness into mainly old French oak barrels. Unfined, unfiltered and bottled under screwcap.

Meet the owners

Utzinger is a genuine love story. Swiss-trained winemaker Matthias Utzinger met Tasmanian-raised Lauren while travelling, and after a stint learning the ropes at Stefano Lubiana's Huon Valley vineyard, the couple planted their own five-hectare certified organic estate from scratch at Legana in 2018. Every vine, clone and row spacing was chosen deliberately, and the wines, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Riesling and a fumé-style Sauvignon Blanc, are made with minimal intervention. Their "Roter Satz" field blend has already picked up back-to-back trophies at the Young Gun of Wine Awards.

Tamar Valley

About the region

The Tamar Valley is Tasmania's oldest wine region, stretching from Launceston to the Bass Strait in the state's north. Its cool maritime climate and iron-rich soils create ideal growing conditions, and the numbers speak for themselves, home to over 30 family-owned wineries, the Tamar Valley accounts for more than a third of Tasmania's total wine production. Viticulture here goes back a long way too, with the first commercial vineyard established in the mid-1800s at Windermere, its cuttings even helping establish some of South Australia's earliest vineyards. Today, the Tamar Valley is celebrated for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and sparkling wines, each one reflecting the region's exceptional terroir and winemaking heritage.
