Gee Pooley make some good wines. A love the combination of earthiness and perfume here, it’s just so appealing and distinct. There’s black and red cherry, spice and creaminess to oak that frames up the wine so well. It has a subtle ferrous character, a fine graphite feel to tannin, balanced acidity, and a slight dried herb character. The finish is long with a quiet ‘mineral’ edge. It feels like it will come together very well with a little more bottle age. So lovely. My kind of Pinot Noir, in short.

Wine Making
Our winemaking focuses on creating an elegant and persistent wine that balances generous red and dark fruit character with fine, supple tannin and brilliant acidity. It is crafted using a blend of clones, often includes a component of whole bunch inclusion for added complexity, and is matured for an extended period in a mix of French oak barriques and puncheons, typically with a low percentage of new oak, to ensure seamless integration and cellarability
Meet the owners
Pooley Wines has been a Coal River Valley institution since 1985, when Denis and Margaret Pooley planted the first vines at Cooinda Vale. Three generations on, the family now farms two sites, Cooinda Vale and the heritage-listed Butcher's Hill at Richmond, and has built a reputation as one of the finest producers of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling in the country. Anna Pooley, granddaughter of the founders, now leads winemaking alongside her husband Justin Bubb, carrying forward a family story built on patience, place and three generations of care.

Coal River Valley
About the region
Tucked into the valleys surrounding the historic town of Richmond, the Coal River Valley is Tasmania's sunniest wine region. Low rainfall, abundant sunshine and cooling breezes off the Tasman Sea come together to create conditions that are about as close to perfect as it gets for grape growing. It shows in the wines: Chardonnay with real texture and depth, Pinot Noir with elegance and structure, Riesling with precision, and sparkling wines that hold their own against the best in the world.
