Cool-climate Syrah from Tasmania's East Coast is something worth knowing about. Milton's 2023 is a fine introduction. Lighter and more elegant than warmer-climate expressions, with vibrant peppery fruitiness and a refreshing balance that makes it endlessly approachable. Crafted in a cooler, wetter vintage, this is a wine of genuine complexity and moreish character. Only 6 bottles left. Pair with slow-cooked lamb, beef cassoulet, or duck. Drink now through 2028.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Peppery spice with hints of dark fruit.

Palate: Light, peppery fruit flavours with a balanced, lingering finish.

Finish: Crisp, fruity, and satisfying without the weight of high alcohol.

Winemaking

2023 was another cooler wetter season with La Nina still being evident and whilst the season did present as this, a later patch of milder sunny weather helped the ripening of the Syrah along and have made an Estate Syrah for you to enjoy. It is not as bold as in warmer years but very enjoyable with any winter fare but especially slow cooked lamb or a beef cassoulet. Peppery fruitiness and a lingering morishness without the heavyiness of a high alcohol wine. Drink now or keep for 5 to 8 years.

About the Vineyard

In 1992 we set to and planted 2.5 HA in the deep red soils of our Cranbrook Syde property just across the river from our current site. This site proved problematic for frost and vigour, so we started again on the dry, rocky free draining soils on the old sheep paddock just by the cellar door. The grapes were sold to Hardy’s for a few years while we learnt a lot about viticulture and then we launched our label in 2005.
From this, we have had great success with our unique micro-climate that suits the ancient grape Pinot Noir and lately, Syrah has proven very popular. We have plantings of the aromatics, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer as well as Chardonnay.
