Seven years on and this Freycinet blend is drinking beautifully. A masterful combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a touch of Cabernet Franc. Deep ruby with a hint of purple, the nose is heady with cigar box, cassis, and liquorice. The palate is rich and layered, with juicy plum, ripe berries, and blackcurrant woven through with liquorice, spice, herbs, and black olive. A wine of real structure and depth from one of Tasmania's most celebrated estates. Pair with slow roasted lamb, beef short rib, or aged hard cheese. Drink now through 2030.

Aroma

Deep ruby with a hint of purple in the glass. Heady aromas of cigar box, cassis, and liquorice fill the nose from the outset.

Palette

A supple, harmonious palate bringing together juicy plum, ripe berry, and blackcurrant fruit with liquorice, spice, dried herbs, and black olive. Attractively integrated savoury oak rounds it out, giving the wine real structure alongside its fruit depth.

Pairings

The savoury, herbal complexity suits slow-roasted lamb, a rich beef stew, or aged hard cheeses, dishes that can meet the wine's structure and tannin.

The 2019 season produced a classic high quality East Coast vintage and has produced one of Claudio's favourite Cabernet Merlot wines for some years!

Just a handful of warm sites around Tasmania, including Freycinet Vineyard, produce excellent Cabernet and Merlot wines. Reminiscent of the Bordeaux region, our cool maritime climate allows us to fully ripen these varieties, creating wines with fine, elegant savoury tannins, worthy of the cellar.

2019 was a classic high quality east coast Tasmanian vintage. Winter and spring were warmer and drier leading to earlier budburst which followed through to an to earlier harvest. The mild conditions in combination with well-timed rains through summer and autumn enabled moderate yields to ripen optimally, producing excellent quality fruit across all varieties.

Mature vines are meticulously hand tended and handpicked, ensuring optimal ripeness. In the winery, fruit is hand sorted and destemmed to ensure fragrance and intensity of flavour.

Meet the owners

Freycinet Vineyard has one of the great origin stories in Tasmanian wine. Geoff Bull was a Sydney Morning Herald photographer turned abalone diver before he and his wife Susan settled in Bicheno and, in 1979, planted the first commercial vineyard on Tasmania's East Coast, guided by pioneers like Andrew Pirie and Claudio Alcorso. Still family owned today, with daughter Lindy and her partner Claudio Radenti carrying the winemaking forward, Freycinet remains 100% estate grown, made and bottled, tucked beneath the dramatic backdrop of the Freycinet Peninsula and Wineglass Bay. Traditional techniques, tight-grain French oak, and minimal intervention define a range that's picked up national acclaim for its Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling.

Stretching from St Helens in the north to Bream Creek in the south, Tasmania's East Coast is as breathtaking as it is bountiful. A milder climate than the rest of the state, spectacular coastal scenery, and over 300 hectares under vine make this one of Tasmania's most exciting wine regions. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the stars, but the East Coast also turns out outstanding Riesling, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc, wines with a freshness and purity that's genuinely hard to find anywhere else.
