Frankcomb's Huon Valley Chardonnay is shaped by one of Tasmania's most distinctive cool climate regions. White nectarine, honey blossom, and white peach on the nose, with a rich, round, and generous palate and subtle nutty cashew notes from French oak ageing. A lovely lingering finish that makes this a natural companion to oysters, seafood marinara, and chicken dishes. Enjoy now or cellar for 5–10 years. Pair with fresh oysters, seafood marinara, or roast chicken. Drink now through 2034.

Tasting Notes

Thanks to the unique Huon Valley climate, this wine has a delicate nose of white nectarine, honey blossom and white peach.

Rich, round, soft and generous palate with hints of nutty cashew from the French oak. Lovely lingering length of flavour. Perfect with oysters, seafood marinara and chicken dishes. Drinking well now but could be cellared for five and up to ten years.

Winemaking

The fruit was hand picked, whole bunch pressed and fermented in French oak barriques with 10% new oak. The wine went through full malolactic fermentation and rested on lees with occasional lees stirring for nine months. Thanks to the gentle handling, the wine is soft, delicate and fresh.

About the Vineyard

Agriculture is constantly challenging, often rewarding, and always inspiring for us. It’s where science and art meet that makes us tick. At our core we are fruit growers, and owing to the cool climate of the Huon, we have been able to produce a variety of flavourful, colourful fruits over many seasons. Not one to shy away from innovation, in the 1990’s John experimented with growing truffles and went on to plant one of the first commercial cherry orchards in Tasmania. It was not until 2015 that an enduring curiosity of establishing a vineyard got the better of us. We propagated select clones of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to suit our site and planted three hectares, vowing to keep it ‘small and beautiful’, and we have.

Maintaining healthy soils and vines is always at the fore of what we do, and with much hand work balancing the vines, we now produce optimum low yields of exceptional quality fruit.
As the vines matured, we supplied winemakers with the grapes cultured to their specifications, and it turns out those wines are delicious. Naturally, our next foray is right here producing our own wine label, Frankcomb.

We are so fortunate to have our wines made within a stone’s throw of the vineyard where each clone is fermented and matured separately in small batches. This enables us to critically taste and craft the most desirable blend prior to bottling, lending each vintage the best expression of the site and season.

Huon Valley

The Huon Valley is Tasmania’s southernmost wine region, and by extension, the southernmost wine region in all of Australia.

Following the winding path of the Huon River from Lake Pedder to the D'Entrecasteaux Channel, this region offers a unique cool-climate growing environment. The north-facing vineyards are sheltered from the cold southerly winds, benefiting instead from a maritime-influenced climate.

The gentle warmth of summer allows for a slow, extended ripening season, resulting in high-quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and sparkling wines.

This extended growing period enhances the complexity and finesse of the wines produced here, making the Huon Valley an ideal region for crafting elegant, cool-climate varieties.
