Wine Making

Pristine parcels from East Coast and Tamar Valley vineyards were hand-picked, chilled and then committed to French oak barrels. Eleven months in wood with partial malolactic fermentation and encouraged lees contact then completed the vinification and maturation. There is little doubt that no wine style has changed quite as dramatically in Australia as Chardonnay, and Tasmania has really been a driver of that. A fuller understanding of cooler sites, and improved knowledge of, and access to, better clones, has transformed a once ubiquitous and full-bodied style in something much more nuanced and detailed than before.

Meet the owners

Evenfall sits on one of the Tamar Valley's oldest vineyard sites, first planted at Legana back in 1972 and known over the decades as Powercourt, then Elmslie, before Tasmanian-born berry entrepreneur Richard Winspear took it on and gave it its current name. Evenfall now shares its restored cellar door and restaurant with neighbouring label Bellebonne, with winemaker Liam McElhinney crafting Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon from some of the oldest Cabernet vines in the state. It's a genuinely collaborative corner of the Tamar, home to several of the region's most exciting names under one roof.

About the region

The Tamar Valley is Tasmania's oldest wine region, stretching from Launceston to the Bass Strait in the state's north. Its cool maritime climate and iron-rich soils create ideal growing conditions, and the numbers speak for themselves, home to over 30 family-owned wineries, the Tamar Valley accounts for more than a third of Tasmania's total wine production. Viticulture here goes back a long way too, with the first commercial vineyard established in the mid-1800s at Windermere, its cuttings even helping establish some of South Australia's earliest vineyards. Today, the Tamar Valley is celebrated for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and sparkling wines, each one reflecting the region's exceptional terroir and winemaking heritage.
