Dr Edge P.J. Dredge Blanc de Noirs - 'Brut Nature' 2020

(0)

$70.00

Made entirely by hand from a single Tamar Valley vineyard, the 2020 P.J. Dredge Blanc de Noirs is a vintage traditional-method sparkling from Tasmania's Dr Edge. Pinot Noir with a touch of Pinot Meunier spent five years on lees before being disgorged as Brut Nature, with no dosage. The result is bone-dry yet textural, with red apple and pear, brioche and toasted nut, bright acidity and a long, saline finish. Huon Hooke awarded it 96 points, calling it "a superb wine of lip-smacking dryness and energy."

Aroma

Red apple and pear, a hint of red berry, citrus pith, and autolytic notes like brioche, toasted nut and biscuit

Palette

Pale straw with a fine mousse. Red apple, pear and citrus pith on the nose, with brioche and toasted nut from five years on lees. The palate is bone-dry and linear, with bright acidity and a creamy mid-palate. It finishes long, saline and chalky. Light-bodied (about 4/10), drinking well now and should hold for five years or more.

Pairings

This wine is bone-dry, saline and creamy, so it suits salty, rich or delicate food: oysters, sashimi, crab or prawns, tempura or fried chicken, creamy cheeses and prosciutto. The Pinot Noir side also handles roast chicken, duck breast and mushroom risotto. Avoid anything sweet, very spicy or tomato-heavy.

Meet the owners

Dr Edge is the deeply personal project of Peter Dredge, one of Tasmania's most respected and inventive winemakers. After a serious head injury derailed a football career in his teens, Peter found his way into wine, working at Petaluma before five years as senior winemaker at Bay of Fires. He launched Dr Edge in 2015, sourcing fruit from single sites across the Tamar Valley, East Coast and Derwent Valley to explore how site and clone shape flavour. Playful, thoughtful and built on genuine experimentation, Dr Edge was ranked 36th in James Halliday's Top 100 Wineries of Australia in 2024.

Tamar Valley

About the region

The Tamar Valley is Tasmania's oldest wine region, stretching from Launceston to the Bass Strait in the state's north. Its cool maritime climate and iron-rich soils create ideal growing conditions, and the numbers speak for themselves, home to over 30 family-owned wineries, the Tamar Valley accounts for more than a third of Tasmania's total wine production. Viticulture here goes back a long way too, with the first commercial vineyard established in the mid-1800s at Windermere, its cuttings even helping establish some of South Australia's earliest vineyards. Today, the Tamar Valley is celebrated for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and sparkling wines, each one reflecting the region's exceptional terroir and winemaking heritage.
