The nose, mysterious and deep with underlying ripe pinot fruit. No bracken or green character here.

Palette

On pouring the first thing you notice is the colour. A deep ruby red , full of promise. This wine is not fined or filtered , yet it is bright and crystal clear. The palate has a textured entry, mouth filling and rich. The long , persistant finish has just enough acid to really make this wine sing. Sit back and enjoy the performance. This wine has depth in its colour, on the nose and the palate. A standout Apsley Gorge. A return to the good old days, plus some.

Pairings

Pork, slow-roasted pork shoulder or a good pork belly, the fat and char work with the tannin and fruit, Duck, roasted or seared duck breast is the classic match; the fat plays beautifully against that acid, and the richness meets the wine's own depth
Salmon or ocean trout, especially seared or with a light char, ripe pinot has enough weight to handle rich fish without a red-with-fish clash

Wine Making

From a slightly cooler wetter year than usual. The 2022 colour is typically dark with a translucent depth.The nose has the rich Apsley Pinot fruit, but something else is pushing through; charcuterie, earthiness, and so much more. After smelling the wine you know the palate is going to be good. Very good! A powerful entry, filling the mouth with rich fruit, complex textural tannins and the indescribable mystery of pinot.

Meet the owners

Apsley Gorge is the work of Brian Franklin, a former abalone diver and lobster fisherman who planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay near Bicheno in the early 1990s. Brian took over winemaking in 1999 and has spent every vintage since travelling to Burgundy to work alongside Philippe Charlopin and, more recently, Charlopin's son Yann. That French technique meets an unusually cool microclimate at the entrance to Apsley Gorge, one of the last sites in Tasmania to harvest each year, resulting in Pinot Noir of real depth and restraint. The winery itself sits in an old fish processing factory overlooking Bicheno's Gulch, one of the more spectacular settings of any winery in the country.

Stretching from St Helens in the north to Bream Creek in the south, Tasmania's East Coast is as breathtaking as it is bountiful. A milder climate than the rest of the state, spectacular coastal scenery, and over 300 hectares under vine make this one of Tasmania's most exciting wine regions. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the stars, but the East Coast also turns out outstanding Riesling, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc, wines with a freshness and purity that's genuinely hard to find anywhere else.
