Wine Making

The 2023 Pinot Noir was made entirely from our single vineyard at 2forty9 Wine Farm in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. We hand-picked the grapes at peak ripeness to keep the fruit flavours fresh and true to the site. Most of the grapes were de-stemmed, but we left about 15% as whole bunches in the ferment to add structure, fragrance, and complexity.
We let the juice stay on the skins for an extended period to draw out as much flavour, tannin, and colour as possible, adding depth and texture to the wine. After fermentation, it was aged in oak for about 10 months – just enough to integrate subtle oak notes without overshadowing the fruit.
The result is a fruit-driven Pinot Noir with lifted aromatics, fine tannins, and a layered palate that showcases the elegance of our Pinot Noir from 2forty9’s farm in the renowned Coal River valley.

This wine is made with deep appreciation and collaboration with our winemaker Rob Drew at Tea Tree and his son George, whose experience and care are central to bringing out the best in our fruit.

Meet the owners

2forty9 Wine Farm sits in the heart of the Coal River Valley, on the family property Wattlebanks at Campania. The Green family has farmed the land since 1954, when Arthur Ormond Green first purchased it, and the fourth generation is now being raised there. The first Pinot Noir vines went in back in 2016, and have been added to steadily ever since. Pinot Noir is the only variety they grow, with several different clones planted across the property.

It's a distinctive practice, one grape and nothing else, giving 2forty9 the chance to really get to know what this particular patch of ground can do with it.

Tucked into the valleys surrounding the historic town of Richmond, the Coal River Valley is Tasmania's sunniest wine region. Low rainfall, abundant sunshine and cooling breezes off the Tasman Sea come together to create conditions that are about as close to perfect as it gets for grape growing. It shows in the wines: Chardonnay with real texture and depth, Pinot Noir with elegance and structure, Riesling with precision, and sparkling wines that hold their own against the best in the world.
