The fruit comes from Beaconsfield vineyard in the Tamar Valley, situated near the Tamar River, which moderates the growing season for a long, cool harvest. Spring frost created selective pressure, allowing the fruit to develop exceptional ripeness with concentrated flavour and naturally high sugar levels from reduced yields. This Gewürztraminer expresses the cool-climate character and provenance of Tasmania's premium wine region.

Wine Making

Fruit was brought into the winery in late April. The
fruit was crushed and destemmed to small open fermenters
and allowed to cold soak for five days being plunged with dry ice regularly. The dry ice acted as an oxidative blanket whilst also exploding the skin cells and releasing all the flavours! The fruit was then pressed and frozen before the juice was separated from the ice. It was then fermented to approximately 100 grams of residual sugar and halted.

Meet the owners

Beautiful Isle Wines began in 2010, when co-founders and winemaking partners Cynthea and David found themselves with some odds and ends in the winery from the Marion's Vineyard estate. For fun, they blended them together on the tasting bench, creating an estate-grown white and red field blend. They liked the results so much that they bottled them, and soon realised the wines needed a home of their own.

That home became Beautiful Isle Wines, inspired by the property's original crop: apples. In the old apple shed, Cynthea and David discovered a series of vintage apple crate labels, which an artist has since incorporated into the Haven and Beautiful Isle labels that adorn the first releases. Iconic in fruit label art, these are two of the brightest, friendliest crate prints around, and a perfect fit for the wines inside. The word "Fancy" was used in the 1930s to mark top quality fruit, which is exactly the spirit here. Fancy Wine! Fancy That!

About the region

The Tamar Valley is Tasmania's oldest wine region, stretching from Launceston to the Bass Strait in the state's north. Its cool maritime climate and iron-rich soils create ideal growing conditions, and the numbers speak for themselves, home to over 30 family-owned wineries, the Tamar Valley accounts for more than a third of Tasmania's total wine production. Viticulture here goes back a long way too, with the first commercial vineyard established in the mid-1800s at Windermere, its cuttings even helping establish some of South Australia's earliest vineyards. Today, the Tamar Valley is celebrated for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and sparkling wines, each one reflecting the region's exceptional terroir and winemaking heritage.
