Aroma

Palette

Pale green tinges hint at the vibrant acidity to come. The palate is clean and clear, with juicy flavours that dance across the tongue. Bright acidity and a long finish make this wine a delight to drink.

Wine Making

After selective picking, the fruit is gently bag pressed and cold settled for 48 hours. Post racking, the juice is inoculated with a neutral yeast and fermented at cool temperatures for around three weeks. After the ferment has been stopped at the required sugar level, the wine spends around 6-8 weeks on lees before being prepared for bottling.

Meet the owners

Pressing Matters began in 2002 when Greg Melick, a barrister and former Major General with a lifelong love of wine, and his wife Michelle planted a vineyard in the Coal River Valley inspired by the neighbouring Morningside property. First releases came in 2006, and the estate quickly built a reputation for Riesling and Pinot Noir grown over a rare seam of limestone that runs through the valley, adding real finesse and structure to the wines. In 2025 the Melicks sold their remaining stake to the Fogarty Wine Group, with winemaking now handled by Liam McElhinney, though the focus on Riesling and Pinot Noir from this distinctive site remains unchanged.

Tucked into the valleys surrounding the historic town of Richmond, the Coal River Valley is Tasmania's sunniest wine region. Low rainfall, abundant sunshine and cooling breezes off the Tasman Sea come together to create conditions that are about as close to perfect as it gets for grape growing. It shows in the wines: Chardonnay with real texture and depth, Pinot Noir with elegance and structure, Riesling with precision, and sparkling wines that hold their own against the best in the world.
