Pooley Butcher's Hill Cane Cut Riesling 2024 (375ml)
(0)
$45.00
Pooley's Cane Cut is one of Tasmania's most elegant dessert wines and one of the most restrained. Made from grapes left on the vine to concentrate their natural sugars, it opens with gentle jasmine, honeysuckle, and citrus blossom, alongside warm caramelised apricot and lime peel. Lively lime, orange pith, and almond on the palate, with a smooth, harmonious finish. A graceful and comforting wine that's perfect with dessert or on its own. Pair with crème brûlée, fresh stone fruit, or blue cheese. Drink now through 2034.

94 / 100
Concentrated and heady cane-cut riesling. Mid-straw in the glass with notes of dried nectarine and apricot, citrus blossom, clover honey, grilled pineapple and mango, those wee lemon tarts, candied citrus fruits and sugarcane juice. Super heady and sweet but that acidity draws everything into line nicely, whooshing across the palate and leaving a vapour trail of candied citrus and stone fruits.
Stuart Knox - The Real Review
88 / 100
Medium intense straw yellow colour. Gardenia, lemon cake and candied lime zest nose. Sweet lemon and floral notes on entry. Has a richness from the barley sugar sweetness so it glides softly to a good length, but finishes without freshening tension to focus it.
Aroma
Incredible balance and harmony within this luscious dessert wine, lifted jasmine, honeysuckle and citrus blossom are accompanied by caramelised apricot and lime peel on the nose.
Palette
Lively aromas of lime, orange pith and almond await you on the palate.
Pairings
This luscious dessert wine, with its balance of sweet apricot and lively citrus, is perfect with desserts. Pair it with fruit tarts (especially apricot or citrus), crème brûlée, or panna cotta. For a savoury contrast, it is sublime with blue cheeses like Roquefort or Gorgonzola
Wine Making
Canes were cut on the 28th of March, Fruit was then hand-picked at 16.5 baume, whole bunch pressed to tank, juice was then put back on skins for 24 hours, pressed and repeated again. In total three press cycles to extract sugars, 5 months on lees prior to bottling.
Meet the owners
Pooley Wines has been a Coal River Valley institution since 1985, when Denis and Margaret Pooley planted the first vines at Cooinda Vale. Three generations on, the family now farms two sites, Cooinda Vale and the heritage-listed Butcher's Hill at Richmond, and has built a reputation as one of the finest producers of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling in the country. Anna Pooley, granddaughter of the founders, now leads winemaking alongside her husband Justin Bubb, carrying forward a family story built on patience, place and three generations of care.

Coal River Valley
About the region
Tucked into the valleys surrounding the historic town of Richmond, the Coal River Valley is Tasmania's sunniest wine region. Low rainfall, abundant sunshine and cooling breezes off the Tasman Sea come together to create conditions that are about as close to perfect as it gets for grape growing. It shows in the wines: Chardonnay with real texture and depth, Pinot Noir with elegance and structure, Riesling with precision, and sparkling wines that hold their own against the best in the world.
