This warmer vintage Pinot Noir, with its rich dark fruit, savory notes, and fine grained tannins from French oak aging, pairs wonderfully with grilled lamb chops, duck confit, or a peppercorn-crusted steak. Its savory, earthy character also suits mushroom and truffle dishes, roasted root vegetables, or a well-aged hard cheese like Gruyère or aged cheddar.

Wine Making

Our Pinot Noirs are made in small lots based on different vineyard picks. All wines are cold soaked for up to a 10 days to tease out early vibrant colour and cheeky bright fruit characters before being open fermented, pressed and finished in a combination of new and old French oak. After secondary fermentation is completed wines are racked and left in cask to mature for at least 10 months after which time we classify each barrel based on its potential and style. Wines appropriate for our reserve range and then left in barrel for up to another 12 months prior to bottling and wines appropriate for our estate range get lightly filtered then bottled.

Meet the owners

Moores Hill sits on a north-east facing hillside near Exeter in the Tamar Valley, first planted in 1997 on a ridge that makes it one of the coolest sites on the West Tamar. In 2017 it became Tasmania's first fully solar-powered winery, a genuine point of difference in an industry not always known for sustainability credentials. Current owners James and Constance bring serious Burgundian and Australian pedigree between them, James with a Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology and stints in Geelong, Mornington, Oregon and Burgundy, Constance a Dijon-trained oenologist. Together they make Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris with a clear focus on cool climate elegance.

About the region

The Tamar Valley is Tasmania's oldest wine region, stretching from Launceston to the Bass Strait in the state's north. Its cool maritime climate and iron-rich soils create ideal growing conditions, and the numbers speak for themselves, home to over 30 family-owned wineries, the Tamar Valley accounts for more than a third of Tasmania's total wine production. Viticulture here goes back a long way too, with the first commercial vineyard established in the mid-1800s at Windermere, its cuttings even helping establish some of South Australia's earliest vineyards. Today, the Tamar Valley is celebrated for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and sparkling wines, each one reflecting the region's exceptional terroir and winemaking heritage.
