Josef Chromy
Josef Chromy Pepik Pinot Noir 2022
(0)
$30.00
Named after Josef Chromy's childhood nickname, the Pepik is the approachable, everyday side of one of Tasmania's great estates. Cherry red with raspberry highlights, the nose is fresh and lifted with sweet berry fruits, red mulberry, and a hint of spice. The palate is bright and juicy with red cherries, raspberries, and delicate tannins that make it effortlessly drinkable. A wine that doesn't take itself too seriously, and is better for it. Pair with pizza, pasta, or a casual Friday. Drink now through 2026.

Aroma
Sweet berry fruits of raspberry and red mulberry, with complex spice and smoky undertones.
Palette
Bright red cherries, raspberries, and juicy tannins, with a spicy, structured mouthfeel. Long, lingering, and balanced with a mix of fruit and spice.
Pairings
This is a more structured, complex Pinot Noir with greater tannin extraction, oak influence, and aromatic depth so it calls for richer fare such as roasted duck, herb-crusted lamb, or braised beef short ribs. It also pairs wonderfully with earthy dishes like mushroom-stuffed pasta or wild game, and its 25% new French oak component complements aged, nutty cheeses like Gruyère or aged Gouda.
Wine Making
Combination of open-top small batches with additional cool ferment closed fermenters. This draws out complexity and structure whilst ensuring that bright fruit predominates. For the 2022 vintage, one third was fermented in French oak barriques (10% new oak) and spent 10 months in barrel before blending.
Meet the owners
Josef Chromy's story is one of the most remarkable in Australian wine. He fled Czechoslovakia in 1950 as a penniless 19-year-old, eventually settling in Tasmania and building a butchery empire before turning to wine in his sixties. After developing and selling brands including Jansz, Heemskerk and Tamar Ridge, Josef launched his namesake winery in 2007, aged 76, at the Relbia property just south of Launceston. In just four years the estate picked up 14 trophies and 170 medals, and the 2011 Chardonnay was named Best Chardonnay in the World at the Decanter World Wine Awards. Josef passed the business on in 2022, but the estate continues producing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and sparkling wine true to his cool climate philosophy.

Tamar Valley
About the region
The Tamar Valley is Tasmania's oldest wine region, stretching from Launceston to the Bass Strait in the state's north. Its cool maritime climate and iron-rich soils create ideal growing conditions, and the numbers speak for themselves, home to over 30 family-owned wineries, the Tamar Valley accounts for more than a third of Tasmania's total wine production. Viticulture here goes back a long way too, with the first commercial vineyard established in the mid-1800s at Windermere, its cuttings even helping establish some of South Australia's earliest vineyards. Today, the Tamar Valley is celebrated for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and sparkling wines, each one reflecting the region's exceptional terroir and winemaking heritage.
