A distinctive bronze, coppery hue in the glass, reflecting the extended skin contact.

Palette

The pinot gris is a skin contact white – so it has picked up some colour, giving it a bronze-like complexion. The idea came from a couple of places I have worked, as well as a known wine technique in Italy, Ramato, described as having a teasing, tactile texture and coppery hue. The juice spent six days on skins before being pressed off and naturally fermenting to completion. Once fermentation was completed, lees stirring (reincorporating the dead yeast cells that have settled) was undertaken to build texture in the mid palate and help round out the wine.

Pairings

Pairs well with charcuterie, pork, or aged soft cheese, matching the wine's texture and depth.

Wine Making

Rush Wines is the namesake of Sam Rush – a winemaker who after nearly a decade in the industry has launched his own label. With a Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir on offer, Rush Wines is a labour of love with grapes sourced from the beautiful Tamar Valley region in lutruwita/Tasmania.
Our wines are made with minimal intervention, allowing for the quality of the Tasmanian fruit to shine through.
Rush Wines represents the chance for Sam to create something that is 100% his, with every decision and aspect of the winemaking coming purely from his actions.

Meet the owners

Rush Wines is the very personal project of Sam Rush, who swapped a forensic chemistry degree for a life in vineyards after a few years working in hospitality sparked his interest in wine. After honing his craft in the Hunter Valley and then across some of Tasmania's most respected producers, including Delamere and Stefano Lubiana, Sam launched his own label in the Tamar Valley in 2021. Made with minimal intervention and no cellar door in sight, Rush wines are sold online and around Launceston, made by a Rush, not in a rush.

About the region

The Tamar Valley is Tasmania's oldest wine region, stretching from Launceston to the Bass Strait in the state's north. Its cool maritime climate and iron-rich soils create ideal growing conditions, and the numbers speak for themselves, home to over 30 family-owned wineries, the Tamar Valley accounts for more than a third of Tasmania's total wine production. Viticulture here goes back a long way too, with the first commercial vineyard established in the mid-1800s at Windermere, its cuttings even helping establish some of South Australia's earliest vineyards. Today, the Tamar Valley is celebrated for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and sparkling wines, each one reflecting the region's exceptional terroir and winemaking heritage.
