Aroma
Bright ruby crimson in colour, the nose has a little meaty gunpowder reduction which opens up to reveal a lively combination of predominantly red fruits. Rosehip, sour cherry and pomegranate dominate, but there is some clove and green peppercorn spiciness there also.
Palette
The palate is compact and tight, with real nerve and tension driving the layered tannins and supporting the generous fruit right through to the finish.
Pairings
Pairs well with confit duck, charcuterie, or a mushroom-based dish, matching the wine's structure and spice.
Wine Making
Hand harvested between 1 April and 11 April 2023.
20% whole bunches with the remainder destemmed, with whole berries.
Cold soaked for three days before being warmed up for ferment with indigenous (wild) yeasts.
Basket pressed just before dryness after len days on skins.
Racked off gross lees to Francois Frees, Mercurey and Ermitage French oak puncheons, 25% of which were new.
Eight months in oak on fine lees prior to blending, ten weeks in tank before botling.
Bottied 15 March 2023: 13% alc., 3.42 pH, 6.1 g/L titratable acidity.
Meet the owners
Stargazer is the work of Samantha "Sam" Connew, a New Zealand-born winemaker who spent a decade as senior winemaker at Wirra Wirra before starting her own label in the Coal River Valley in 2013. The name pays tribute to Abel Tasman, the Dutch explorer who first connected her old home to her new one. Sam's Palisander Vineyard in Tea Tree produces Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay alongside more experimental drops like Gamay and Pinot Blanc, all farmed with a strong focus on sustainability and letting each vintage's character shine through.

Coal River Valley
About the region
Tucked into the valleys surrounding the historic town of Richmond, the Coal River Valley is Tasmania's sunniest wine region. Low rainfall, abundant sunshine and cooling breezes off the Tasman Sea come together to create conditions that are about as close to perfect as it gets for grape growing. It shows in the wines: Chardonnay with real texture and depth, Pinot Noir with elegance and structure, Riesling with precision, and sparkling wines that hold their own against the best in the world.
