Aroma

Deep colour, with black cherry and dark plum aromas.

Palette

This wine has a gorgeous depth of colour and flavour: plums and black cherries, a spritz of acidity, and opulent tannin. Always, elegance is characteristic of the fruit sourced solely from our site in the Coal River Valley of Tasmania’s south.

Pairings

With its deep, concentrated black cherry and blackberry fruit, dried herb notes, and bright acidity balancing plush tannins, this Pinot Noir calls for something equally bold, like a herb crusted rack of lamb, grilled venison loin, or duck breast with a blackberry thyme jus. The wine's fleshy density and persistence also make it a great match for umami-rich dishes like mushroom and truffle risotto or a juicy wagyu steak, where the bright acidity can cut through the richness.

Wine Making

After hand picking, each batch is hand sorted and then de-stemmed without crushing. Each clone is picked, processed and fermented separately. It is cold soaked under inert gas coverage for 2/3 days prior to being allowed to warm up for ferment, getting a gentle hand plunging 2 to 3 times a day. Upon reaching dryness (around 7-10 days later), it is pressed via gravity directly to oak, again each batch being kept separate. After malolactic fermentation is complete, it is sulphured and remains on lees prior to blending and bottling ten months later.

Meet the owners

Pressing Matters began in 2002 when Greg Melick, a barrister and former Major General with a lifelong love of wine, and his wife Michelle planted a vineyard in the Coal River Valley inspired by the neighbouring Morningside property. First releases came in 2006, and the estate quickly built a reputation for Riesling and Pinot Noir grown over a rare seam of limestone that runs through the valley, adding real finesse and structure to the wines. In 2025 the Melicks sold their remaining stake to the Fogarty Wine Group, with winemaking now handled by Liam McElhinney, though the focus on Riesling and Pinot Noir from this distinctive site remains unchanged.

Coal River Valley

About the region

Tucked into the valleys surrounding the historic town of Richmond, the Coal River Valley is Tasmania's sunniest wine region. Low rainfall, abundant sunshine and cooling breezes off the Tasman Sea come together to create conditions that are about as close to perfect as it gets for grape growing. It shows in the wines: Chardonnay with real texture and depth, Pinot Noir with elegance and structure, Riesling with precision, and sparkling wines that hold their own against the best in the world.
