Aroma

Rose hip tea, dried cranberry and a lashing of campari on the nose. Plenty of sous bois / garrigue notes on the palette, with the bucket of raspberries to back it all up.

Palette

Rich forest and herbal notes (sous bois, garrigue) meet fresh raspberry fruit, balanced by crisp acidity and smooth, silty tannin. Delicate and distinctive rather than immediately generous

Pairings

Pairs well with salmon, duck, or a simple roast — its lighter frame and bright acidity suit food that won't overpower it.

Wine Making

From a single site in the Huon Valley set on grey Permian mudstone - 25% whole bunch and the remainder destemmed Pinot Noir - wild ferment with gentle daily pigeage - basket pressed to old oak barriques for 10 months elevage - minimal sulphur addition at bottling - 1100 bottles produced

Meet the owners

L'appel is the small-batch project of Tasmanian vignerons Bart Johnston and Jess Nuel, sourcing fruit from standout sites across the Tamar Valley, Huon Valley, Coal River Valley and East Coast. Bart's path to winemaking ran through the Pinot Noirs of Oregon's Willamette Valley and a stint on the Mornington Peninsula before Tasmania pulled him home. The wines are wild fermented, unfiltered and made with a light touch, built around regional expression rather than a fixed house style. Honest, curious winemaking from two of the island's rising names.

Tamar Valley

About the region

The Tamar Valley is Tasmania's oldest wine region, stretching from Launceston to the Bass Strait in the state's north. Its cool maritime climate and iron-rich soils create ideal growing conditions, and the numbers speak for themselves, home to over 30 family-owned wineries, the Tamar Valley accounts for more than a third of Tasmania's total wine production. Viticulture here goes back a long way too, with the first commercial vineyard established in the mid-1800s at Windermere, its cuttings even helping establish some of South Australia's earliest vineyards. Today, the Tamar Valley is celebrated for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and sparkling wines, each one reflecting the region's exceptional terroir and winemaking heritage.
