Aroma

Ruby red in colour with prominent aromas of dark cherry, red berries and a hint of sweet spice.

Palette

The Holm Oak Pinot Noir is a generous wine. Soft and inviting from the first sip, then opening to a peacock’s tail of red stone fruit, strawberries and fresh mushrooms on a textured framework of satin tannins, restrained toasted oak and light savoury notes. This is balanced with lingering acidity, resulting in a satisfying, long finish.

Pairings

The savoury, earthy undertones make it a natural with mushroom and truffle risotto, or duck and hazelnut sausages. Also suits roast lamb or anything with an earthy, umami edge.

Wine Making

2025 was a warm and generous year with long summer days and higher than average night time temperatures. Vintage started and finished earlier than usual but was a little more spread out than the frantic 2024 vintage. These conditions have resulted in a pretty, aromatic Pinot Noir. Several clones of Pinot Noir from many blocks on our Estate vineyard were picked over a three-week period. All batches were destemmed and were wild fermented in small open top fermenters. Ferments were hand plunged up to 4 times a day and then pressed to oak upon dryness. The wine underwent MLF in barrel and was then racked back to barrel for further maturation. 25% new French oak was used (the remainder 1 – 4 year old barrels) and the wine was matured in these barrels for 9 months.

Meet the owners

Holm Oak sits on land with a genuinely unusual history, first planted to Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1983 by Justice Edward Butler on a Tamar Valley property once owned by an architect with a passion for native timber. Winemaker Bec Duffy and her husband Tim, a viticulturist, bought the property from Bec's parents in 2013 and have run it ever since with a hands-on, honest approach that mirrors their own personalities. Known for pushing the boundaries of Pinot Noir in particular, Holm Oak has held a James Halliday Five Star rating and remains one of the Tamar Valley's most genuine family stories.

About the region

The Tamar Valley is Tasmania's oldest wine region, stretching from Launceston to the Bass Strait in the state's north. Its cool maritime climate and iron-rich soils create ideal growing conditions, and the numbers speak for themselves, home to over 30 family-owned wineries, the Tamar Valley accounts for more than a third of Tasmania's total wine production. Viticulture here goes back a long way too, with the first commercial vineyard established in the mid-1800s at Windermere, its cuttings even helping establish some of South Australia's earliest vineyards. Today, the Tamar Valley is celebrated for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and sparkling wines, each one reflecting the region's exceptional terroir and winemaking heritage.
