Aroma

Alluring aromas of spice and macerated cherries, ripe raspberries and plums combine with a subtle floral perfume of rosehip, truffle and undergrowth.

Palette

The hallmarks of power, concentration, complexity and length feature in this wine. The vibrant palate is silken and detailed, offering an abundance of exotic spice, pomegranate and sour cherry flavours intermingled with subtle oak nuances, svelte mineral tannins and a satiny mouthfeel. Silky texture and gamey, intriguing forest floor characteristics will further develop with careful cellaring over 10 to 15 years.

Pairings

Built for roast duck, venison, or mushroom ragù . Dishes with enough earthiness and richness to match the wine's savoury complexity. Also excellent with aged hard cheese.

Wine Making

The 2024 season on the east coast of Tasmania saw the return of warmer, drier conditions after three cooler, wetter, La Nina influenced seasons. The winter preceding the growing season set the scene with mild above average temperatures throughout and close to normal rainfall. Spring and summer continued this warmer than average temperature pattern and low rain fall. Budburst was early as a result and settled flowering conditions provided a return to long-term average yields with perfect, well-formed bunches. Given the extra warmth throughout the season all varieties ripened beautifully and up to three weeks earlier than normal. Fruit quality was exceptional with concentrated flavours and ripe, juicy acidity.

Fully ripened fruit is handpicked for this wine from our original 1979 plantings of predominately own rooted G5V15 clone. 100% whole berry fermentation provides impressive fruit weight and elegant, supple tannins. Matured in French oak barriques (25% new) for 10 months on fine lees.

Meet the owners

Freycinet Vineyard has one of the great origin stories in Tasmanian wine. Geoff Bull was a Sydney Morning Herald photographer turned abalone diver before he and his wife Susan settled in Bicheno and, in 1979, planted the first commercial vineyard on Tasmania's East Coast, guided by pioneers like Andrew Pirie and Claudio Alcorso. Still family owned today, with daughter Lindy and her partner Claudio Radenti carrying the winemaking forward, Freycinet remains 100% estate grown, made and bottled, tucked beneath the dramatic backdrop of the Freycinet Peninsula and Wineglass Bay. Traditional techniques, tight-grain French oak, and minimal intervention define a range that's picked up national acclaim for its Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling.

Stretching from St Helens in the north to Bream Creek in the south, Tasmania's East Coast is as breathtaking as it is bountiful. A milder climate than the rest of the state, spectacular coastal scenery, and over 300 hectares under vine make this one of Tasmania's most exciting wine regions. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the stars, but the East Coast also turns out outstanding Riesling, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc, wines with a freshness and purity that's genuinely hard to find anywhere else.
