This is a wine with a story worth telling. The Merlot vines at Freycinet were planted by founders Geoff and Susan Bull in 1979. Some of the oldest in Tasmania and this 2020 vintage, crafted by the 2nd and 3rd generation of the family, is a tribute to that legacy. Rich plums, blueberries, and warm spices on the nose, with savoury herbs and subtle black olive adding complexity. Elegant and poised, with a structure that promises longevity. Only 1,000 bottles made and just 12 available here. Pair with slow-roasted lamb, duck confit, or aged hard cheese. Drink now through 2035.

Aroma

A pretty, red-fruited nose — redcurrant, raspberry, and red cherry, with a faint whisper of watermelon and cranberry running underneath.

Palette

Rich and densely flavoured with superb structure and poise. Elegant plums and blueberries meet spice, savoury herbs, and black olive, giving the wine substance and fragrance in equal measure.

Pairings

The structure and savoury complexity call for something equally substantial. Slow-roasted duck, mushroom-based dishes, or aged cheeses would all suit the wine's poise.

Meet the owners

Freycinet Vineyard has one of the great origin stories in Tasmanian wine. Geoff Bull was a Sydney Morning Herald photographer turned abalone diver before he and his wife Susan settled in Bicheno and, in 1979, planted the first commercial vineyard on Tasmania's East Coast, guided by pioneers like Andrew Pirie and Claudio Alcorso. Still family owned today, with daughter Lindy and her partner Claudio Radenti carrying the winemaking forward, Freycinet remains 100% estate grown, made and bottled, tucked beneath the dramatic backdrop of the Freycinet Peninsula and Wineglass Bay. Traditional techniques, tight-grain French oak, and minimal intervention define a range that's picked up national acclaim for its Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling.

About the region

Stretching from St Helens in the north to Bream Creek in the south, Tasmania's East Coast is as breathtaking as it is bountiful. A milder climate than the rest of the state, spectacular coastal scenery, and over 300 hectares under vine make this one of Tasmania's most exciting wine regions. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the stars, but the East Coast also turns out outstanding Riesling, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc, wines with a freshness and purity that's genuinely hard to find anywhere else.
