Winemaking

The cold climate of Tasmania is the perfect climate for crafting outstanding sparkling wines. Our sparkling Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyard is located in the northern Tamar Valley on a high rise above the beautiful Tamar River. The vineyard has a stunning northerly and north easterly aspects and its deep, grey sand delivers pristine fruit with vibrant acidity. Handpicked, the grapes are whole bunch pressed. Primary cool fermentation occurred in stainless steel resulting in a sparkling base showing lovely character and acidity. Secondary fermentation developed complexity, richness and a lovely fine bead.

About the Vineyard

Lost Farm Wines is a cool climate winemaking project of the Angove Family. After working vintage in Tasmania in 2008, fifth generation winemaker, Richard Angove returned to work in the family’s 136-year-old business with the idea firmly in the back of his mind to one day make wines from the cold climate of Tasmania as part of the family’s range.

In 2018 the opportunity arose to partner with a small group of exceptional grape growers in the Tamar Valley in the North of Tasmania and Lost Farm - Tasmania was born. The range comprises Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Sparkling wines.

Tamar Valley

The Tamar Valley is Tasmania’s oldest wine region, located in Northern Tasmania and stretching from Launceston to the Bass Strait.

This region is renowned for its cool maritime climate and iron-rich soils, which provide ideal growing conditions for producing premium wines.

Home to over 30 family-owned wineries, the Tamar Valley accounts for more than a third of Tasmania’s total wine production. The region has a long history of viticulture, with its first commercial vineyard established in the mid-1800s at Windermere, and its cuttings even contributing to the early vineyards in South Australia.

Today, the Tamar Valley is celebrated for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, and sparkling wines, all of which reflect the region’s exceptional terroir and winemaking heritage.
