Josef Chromy's Pinot Gris is one of the most aromatic and complex expressions of the variety in Tasmania. Honeydew melon, blushed peach skin, exotic lychee, and warming ginger spice on the nose. The palate is rich and textured with an mouthfeel of red apple, honeydew melon, lychee, and juicy persimmon, beautifully balanced by refreshing acidity. A wine of real depth and character. Pair with Thai cuisine, fresh crayfish, or aged soft cheese. Drink now through 2029.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Honeydew melon, blushed peach skin, lychee fruit, and warming ginger spice.

Palate: Rich and oily texture with flavours of red apple, honeydew melon, lychee, and juicy persimmon.

Finish: Balanced by refreshing acidity, with a long, satisfying finish.

Winemaking

Pinot Gris grapes from blocks 6,8 and 10 of our Relbia vineyard were picked at optimal ripeness in late March 2023. Gentle whole bunch pressing was carried out at the winery, with the free run portion fermenting at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks to retain a delicate aromatic profile, whereas the pressings were placed in older oak barrels for fermentation and maturation on lees to build texture and body. In early June 2023 the two components were combined to create the final blend. Gentle fining, stabilisation and clarification processes followed, and the wine was bottled in late August 2023.

Situated at the heart of Relbia, just south of Launceston, Josef Chromy Wines represents the pinnacle of innovative winemaking. Our state-of-the-art facility houses advanced equipment ensuring every grape is treated with utmost care. Our minimal intervention methods intend to preserve the essence of our cool-climate Tasmanian fruit.

Our vineyard sites produce premium varieties like pinot noir, chardonnay, and riesling. Nestled at an altitude between 81 to 170 metres, and boasting a temperate maritime climate free from extremes, our vines benefit from rich alkaline clay and stony soils atop an ancient dolerite base. With a commitment to quality and respect for the land, Josef Chromy Wines continues to set benchmarks in cool climate winemaking.
