Tasting Notes

From three different sites across the Derwent and the Coal River Valleys. It is the most dark fruited of the sub regional releases, driven by the mature fruit from Nocton Vineyard. It saw around 25% whole bunches in the blend overall, balancing the density and structure we find in these southern vineyards.

Winemaking

2024 Two Tonne Tasmania EST Pinot Noir

Fruit for this wine is sourced from a single vineyard on Tasmania’s central east coast: Blackwood Estate in Cranbrook. Given the right growing conditions, Pinot Noir from the Freycinet Coast displays a more structured style: bold, savoury and terroir-driven. The vines at Blackwood range from five to 30 years old and lie in a mix of granite and hard, rocky, volcanic soils. The fruit fermented with 100% whole berries for seven days before being pressed to seasoned oak to finish. The wine then matured in barrique (15% new) for 10 months.

About the Vineyard

Established in 2013, Two Tonne Tasmania focuses on sub-regional pinot noir, chardonnay & riesling.

These wines are produced from our own vineyards in the Tamar Valley, and a small number of dedicated growers across the state.

Derwent Valley

The Derwent Valley wine region, located to the north-west of Hobart, stretches from the lower reaches of the River Derwent at Granton to the scenic hills and valleys around Meadowbank.

The region's vineyards are perched on north-facing hillsides, which provide ideal sun exposure for grape growing. Known for its cool climate, the area primarily produces Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling, echoing Tasmania’s wider wine production focus.

Although once regarded as a marginal area for viticulture due to its cooler climate, the upper reaches of the Derwent Valley have recently gained recognition for producing stunning examples of cool-climate wines, reflecting the unique terroir of the region.
