Tasting Notes

With an endless number of aspects and micro climates, the wine is produced from five sites from throughout the Tamar Valley. These sites together express what we love most about chardonnay from this Tassie sub region.

Picked right on time, the palate is fresh, yet generous. There’s a lovely sea spray character which carries you into perfectly ripe peach and lemon curd on the palate. The wine went through partial malolactic fermentation, and the acid is pure and long.

Winemaking

2024 Two Tonne Tasmania TMV Chardonnay

For the last few years, our Woodlawn Park site in the Tamar Valley has contributed the lion’s share (70% in 2024) of the fruit for TMV Chardonnay. After years of work, this breezy site on free-draining silty and sandy soils near the river in Swan Bay produces vibrantly pure, potent fruit. The balance is sourced from Tamar sites we have worked with for years: Three Wishes in Hillwood (20%), Chartley Estate in Rowella (5%), and Glen Shian in Relbia (5%), resulting in a holistic Chardonnay snapshot of the Tamar. We picked over several passes, chasing racy freshness and round, generous weight. Fermentations occurred mainly in puncheons with a single foudre in the mix (15% new). A single parcel matured on lees in tank, whereas the rest remained in wood with occasional lees stirring and partial malolactic conversion. The wine matured for 10 months.

About the Vineyard

Established in 2013, Two Tonne Tasmania focuses on sub-regional pinot noir, chardonnay & riesling.

These wines are produced from our own vineyards in the Tamar Valley, and a small number of dedicated growers across the state.

Tamar Valley

The Tamar Valley is Tasmania’s oldest wine region, located in Northern Tasmania and stretching from Launceston to the Bass Strait.

This region is renowned for its cool maritime climate and iron-rich soils, which provide ideal growing conditions for producing premium wines.

Home to over 30 family-owned wineries, the Tamar Valley accounts for more than a third of Tasmania’s total wine production. The region has a long history of viticulture, with its first commercial vineyard established in the mid-1800s at Windermere, and its cuttings even contributing to the early vineyards in South Australia.

Today, the Tamar Valley is celebrated for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, and sparkling wines, all of which reflect the region’s exceptional terroir and winemaking heritage.
