The Josef Chromy Pinot Noir 2022 offers lifted aromatics of sweet spice and toasty oak, intertwined with red fruits like plum, cherry, raspberry, and cranberry. Underlying hints of bramble bush, leather, and earthy undertones add complexity to the bouquet.

On the palate, the wine is concentrated and juicy, with flavours of red fruit, smoked meat, and dark chocolate mousse. An abundance of spices complements the fine tannins, leading to a long, satisfying finish.

Winemaking

Each parcel of fruit is hand picked at optimal conditions and placed in open top fermenters with varying degrees of whole bunch or destemmed whole berries. The fruit is cooled down and allowed to cold soak in tank in order to extract colour and aroma compounds prior to the onset of fermentation. Some ferments are allowed to begin naturally and some are inoculated with cultured yeast. Regular pump overs during fermentation takes place to optimise extraction of aromas, flavours and tannins. Post fermentation the wines are pressed to tank and allowed to settle before being racked off into French oak barrels of which about 25% are new each year. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels with regular monitoring and tasting to evaluate each parcel’s attributes. After an aging period in oak of about 8 months, the wine is taken out of barrels and the final blend is created. Bottled February 2023.

Tamar Valley

The Tamar Valley is Tasmania’s oldest wine region, located in Northern Tasmania and stretching from Launceston to the Bass Strait.

This region is renowned for its cool maritime climate and iron-rich soils, which provide ideal growing conditions for producing premium wines.

Home to over 30 family-owned wineries, the Tamar Valley accounts for more than a third of Tasmania’s total wine production. The region has a long history of viticulture, with its first commercial vineyard established in the mid-1800s at Windermere, and its cuttings even contributing to the early vineyards in South Australia.

Today, the Tamar Valley is celebrated for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, and sparkling wines, all of which reflect the region’s exceptional terroir and winemaking heritage.
