He fled Czechoslovakia in 1950 as a penniless 19-year-old, eventually settling in Tasmania and building a butchery empire before turning to wine in his sixties. After developing and selling brands including Jansz, Heemskerk and Tamar Ridge, Josef launched his namesake winery in 2007, aged 76, at the Relbia property just south of Launceston. In just four years the estate picked up 14 trophies and 170 medals, and the 2011 Chardonnay was named Best Chardonnay in the World at the Decanter World Wine Awards.
